My first experiment in Unity3D! and I can only say that it is amazing what you can do in just 30 minutes. Unity3D is undoubtedly an engine to take into account when developing games.
Advantages:
- Interface: The interface is well defined and can be configured like Eclipse ( I’m missing some editing shortcuts – although it may exist )
- Scripting: There are some scripts to start playing with the environment, but you can develop your own using different languages such as Javascript or C# and I know both
- Multiplatform: want to develop for iPhone? Web? Android? Desktop? All in one!
- Prefabs: it is simply a set of objects and scripts, imagine for example a propeller that turns the body is a 3D object and tour with a script, a prefab can be duplicated (acts like the original), instantiated and modified ( modify only a prefab or all at once)
(If you look at the demo videos on the web you will have a more detailed information about this.)
Update on Prefabs: I just discovered this website you may be interested in, although some prefabs are shared on the community for free in this website you can find some comercial ones…
- Forum: I didn’t looked much in it but there is some movement and uses StackOverflow engine
- Documentation: The web seems to offer a wide documentation about the engine, tutorials, downloadable examples…. great!
- Speed: The best thing is the engine speed goes, is simply wonderful.
Disadvantages:
- None? Well, maybe is the lack of plugin penetration, but something tells me this is going to change soon
What you can see down below ( Just click on the image ) is a demo I’ve done in just over 30 minutes (bearing in mind that I have watched the tutorials), you will recognize the Blender Monkey and I wanted to try imports, although this texturing within of Unity3D.
No doubt I’ll spend some time with this new toy in the future
